Dean Clemmer, M.S., L.P.C., Therapist
Dean is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. He also holds a certification in Marriage and Family Therapy and has been practicing psychotherapy with individuals and couples for over 20 years. His approach involves using insight and new ways of viewing problems as a springboard for change. Areas of special interest and experience include working with relationship differences, depression, anger management, trauma and anxiety, men's issues and pathological vs. healthy spiritual development.


Carol Emerson, M.S.S., L.C.S.W., Therapist
Carol received her Masters in Social Service at Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. Her work experience includes the hospital inpatient unit, intensive outpatient programs, group therapy and individual therapy. Specialty areas include depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders. Carol has been trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy which works well with complex personality issues, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.


Lois Frey Gray, L.C.S.W., Therapist
Lois specializes in individual counseling and therapy with adults of all ages. As a licensed clinical social worker, Lois uses a broad range of therapeutic methods to support people in their healing and growth, especially those going through significant life changes or losses as well as those recovering from trauma and abuse. Lois received her MSSW from the University of Tennessee and a post-masters Certificate in Individual Therapy from Smith College School for Social Work in Massachusetts. She was trained to lead Intensive Journal Workshops by Ira Progoff, Ph.D., the internationally known originator of this process for life integration.


James W. Hanna, D.Min., Executive Director, Pastoral Counselor
A founder of the Samaritan Counseling Center, Jim has been practicing individual, relationship, and group therapy since 1971. He has facilitated numerous seminars and has authored a book on Intimacy. He works with issues related to loss and life transitions, marital and couples therapy, and those dealing with faith concerns. He consults with churches and other organizations, and provides clergy and executive coaching consultation. Jim has also authored a book on Intimacy.


Perry J. Hazeltine, Ph.D., Psychologist
Perry holds Doctorate in Counseling Psychology and a bachelors degree in religious studies. His work centers on counseling for children and families, but he enjoys individual counseling with adults as well. Perry uses play therapy, family therapy and parent consultation, as needed. He is especially interested in treating child anxieties and fears, adolescent anger and depression and recovery from trauma for all ages. As an experienced trainer of psychology interns from several different universities, Perry is now looking for opportunities to provide consultation and supervision to organizations and individuals.


Alta Landis, M.S., L.P.C., Clinical Director
Alta holds a Master’s degree in Psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. In her counseling experience of over 20 years, she provides therapy for adults who seek to understand and adjust to life’s powerful transitions created by aging, divorce, death, illness, career disruptions, identity confusion, change in family structures and marital issues. She works with depression, anxiety, grief, disillusionment or disconnection from one’s spiritual values and beliefs. Her approach incorporates ways for finding clarity and direction for growth and healthy living. She also provides counseling for couples in traditional and nontraditional relationships.


Herb Landis, L.C.S.W., B.C.D., Therapist
Herb is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is certified by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work as well as is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. He received his Masters at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1990. Herb has provided psychotherapy services for all ages while working in community mental health as a Senior Clinician and Crisis Intervention Supervisor and has worked with children, adolescents, families, adults and couples as an outpatient therapist. His areas of interest and experience include working with depression, anxiety, trauma, crisis, grief, men's issues and sexuality issues. He also works with the Amish population. Herb uses psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral intervention as well as solution focused and problem solving techniques.


Beth A. Mull, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist
Beth has a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology through the Samaritan Counseling Center. She conducts neuropsychological testing to identify cognitive impairments resulting from traumatic brain injury, stroke and dementia. She also assesses learning and behavioral problems, as well as personality functioning. In addition to her interests in testing, Beth conducts psychotherapy with children and adults at our offices at Oregon Pike and Lititz.


Nancy Rainey, M.S., L.P.C., Therapist
Nancy has a Master’s degree in counseling from Loyola College in Maryland. She is a licensed professional counselor who has worked with children, adolescents, families, and adults in partial and inpatient hospital settings. Before coming to the Samaritan Counseling Center, Nancy worked in residential treatment facilities for adolescents and as a school-based outpatient therapist in elementary and middle school settings. Nancy approaches counseling from a personal belief in the strength and resiliency of the human spirit. She uses psychodynamic, experiential and cognitive behavioral interventions as well as mindfulness techniques in working with persons experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar illness, attention deficit and hyperactivity, oppositional defiant disorder, school performance/behavior problems, self injury, and anger issues. Additionally, Nancy has a special interest in providing therapy to persons with cancer and other chronic or acute physical illnesses.


Betty Snapp-Barrett, M.A., M.Div., L.M.F.T., Therapist
Betty is a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She has served in parish, hospital and agency settings. She is also an adjunct professor at Lancaster Theological Seminary. She works with individuals, families, and couples, providing counseling for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma and abuse, loss and life transitions, identity issues, sexuality and intimacy issues, conflict management, and communication problems. Betty also preaches, teaches and leads groups focusing on the above topics. She enjoys incorporating the arts into her work.


Frank J. Stalfa, D.Min., L.P.C., Therapist
Frank is a therapist and pastoral counselor at Samaritan Counseling Center as well as an Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary. Frank is a Diplomate with the American Psychotherapy Association and a National Board Certified and Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to working with those who need marital or couples therapy, Frank provides marital consultation with couples, and counsels persons concerned about faith issues, those who are in divorce transition, and those who are grieving. Frank helped develop the Center's premarital workshops over the past several years.


Stephanie Van Deusen, Ph.D., L.P.C., Therapist
Stephanie holds a Ph.D. in Counseling from Loyola College in Maryland. She holds a Masters in Science in Counseling from Loyola College and a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in Family Studies from Messiah College. She is a licensed Professional Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor. She trained under the direct supervision of Dr. Christine Courtois for one year in a Partial Day Hospital for Posttraumatic Stress Disorders. She completed a second year of training under Dr. Courtois and Dr. Joan Turkus specializing in the treatment of severe Dissociative disorders. Stephanie’s doctoral research looks at the impact of psychological trauma and one’s attachment to God on psychological well-being. Her extensive experience working with trauma survivors also includes working with children with attachment related disorders and women with substance use disorders. She also specializes in working with therapists dealing with vicarious traumatization and burn-out issues. Her theoretical approach to counseling incorporates a psychodynamic/object relations model with cognitive/behavioral interventions. She also utilizes Dialectual Behavioral Therapy and Guided Imagery/Stress Reduction interventions. Stephanie also works as a professional trainer and consultant.
