Developing Safe Church Policies, Guidelines and Practices to Reduce Risk
For clergy, congregational leaders, districts, and judicatories.
The Walking Together program offers consultation on development of policies and guidelines for reducing the risk of child sexual abuse and sexual harassment. We provide training for clergy, Stephen ministers, and others on ministering to families experiencing domestic violence; understanding the needs of adult survivors of child sexual abuse; integrating a convicted sexual offender into the congregation; and congregational healing in the aftermath of trauma.
A Safe Church in one in which:
- Adults are educated to protect children from abuse within and outside of the church
- Children and teens are empowered through Christian education
- Policies, guidelines and other elements of a Safe Church are developed AND
- reviewed at least annually and updated if needed
- communicated periodically to the congregation
- routinely utilized
- Staff is trained on
- Dynamics of child abuse
- Responding to disclosures
- When and how a mandated report of suspected child abuse must be made
- Ministries of support and healing are developed to respond to
- Those experiencing domestic violence
- Adult survivors of child sexual abuse
