Pastoral Care of Victims and Offenders
A half day training for clergy (recommended for clergy groups, ministeriums, judicatories, districts). We know from extensive research that violence in the family occurs without regard for race, economic status, profession, or religious affiliation. We are as likely to find victims – and perpetrators – in our congregation as anywhere else. And herein lays the problem for most religious leaders: Many times, both victim and offender are congregants. In this training for clergy, the practical and the pastoral agenda are synergized while prioritizing safety and healing for the victim, and accountability and repentance for the offender. The session includes case studies on intimate partner violence and child sexual abuse, as well as a focus on ethical, legal and pastoral responsibilities. Attention is also given to the impact of the clergy person’s own experiences of or exposure to trauma when engaging with victims and perpetrators.
