The Whole Organizes the Parts: Leadership and the Congregation as a Family System The Samaritan Counseling Center is pleased to announce its 2010 Pastoral Leadership Series: The Whole Organizes the Parts: Leadership and the Congregation as a Family System. The series, open to any interested clergy person and professional church staff, consists of a quarterly breakfast at which a topic related to family systems is presented, followed by an opportunity to attend a three-session group the next month. The groups allow participants to explore a more in-depth understanding of the topic in an environment of collegial support and mutual learning, and include integrative work to help with practical application of the theory. Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. -Corinthians 12: 14:20 New International Version Although Paul was writing many years before Dr. Murray Bowen (1913-1990), his systems theory helps us to understand and apply the “one body with many parts” concept Paul describes. Our 2010 clergy breakfasts and leadership groups will utilize Bowen Family Systems theory, modern neuroscience and psychology, and Biblical texts to assist clergy to develop a deeper understanding of the congregation as a complex interdependent emotional system, the unique challenges to differentiated leadership for clergy, and practical application of theory. The leadership series is offered as part of our expanding Clergy and Congregation Care Program.
