Samaritan Counseling Center’s First Annual Ethics in Business Award A Great Success The Samaritan Counseling Center is pleased and proud to announce the recipients of the 2007 Ethics in Business Award: Lancaster Laboratories, Inc. (for-profit category); Lancaster Day Care Center (not-for-profit category); and Stephen L. Powell (individual business person category). The three recipients were honored and celebrated along with the 15 other final nominees at the First Annual Ethics in Business Award presentation on June 21, 2007. With over 200 in attendance, the event was a great success.

The late afternoon event, held at Liberty Place in Lancaster, began with a tribute to the late Earl Hess, whose work and passion for Ethics in Business was an inspiration for the Samaritan Counseling Center’s Award. After recalling Dr. Hess through a poignant video production, members of the Hess family accepted the first Ethics in Business Award in his memory.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Rushworth Kidder, Founder and President of the Institute for Global Ethics in Camden, Maine, was first introduced to Lancaster in the early 1990’s by Dr. Hess. Dr. Hess also served as a trustee for the Institute from 1995 – 2001. Welcomed back to Lancaster for the first time in several years, Dr. Kidder spoke on the topic of “Moral Courage: The Guts of a Tough Decision.” At the reception following the event, many attendees were able to meet Dr. Kidder and discuss his presentation.

Following Dr. Kidder’s keynote address, the audience was introduced to the 2007 Ethics in Business Award recipients through profile videos produced by Andrea Campbell and Natural Light Films. Each of the recipients exemplify the Five Principles of Conduct which form the criteria of the Award: Integrity, Fairness & Justice, Stewardship, Life-Enhancement and Transparency. The following is a brief introduction to each of the recipients:

Lancaster Laboratories, Inc., 2007 recipient in the For-Profit Business category, is one of the nation’s leading laboratories. The founding values of providing high quality services with personal attention to client needs have formed the essence of the corporate culture. The company has pioneered many significant accomplishments including being the first laboratory accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, preparing the first qualifications manual in the industry, implementing a total quality management system in 1989, developing a computerized laboratory information management systems in the 1970s and designing a model automated system for retrieval and storage of samples in 1991 which is the only laboratory to have such a system. In addition, Lancaster Laboratories has initiated innovative and nationally recognized family friendly workforce policies which include on-site child care, adult day care, and fitness centers.

Lancaster Day Care Center, the 2007 recipient in the Not-for Profit organization category, was founded in 1915. The Center is a member of the United Way and is dedicated to providing the highest quality subsidized child care for low and moderate income families who are working full-time or enrolled as full-time students. Located on South Queen Street, strives to give each enrolled child and their families the best beginning possible to flourish and succeed. It serves over 100 children annually ranging in age from eight weeks to kindergarten age. Since it’s founding, the Lancaster Day Care Center has provided affordable quality day care to children of all social, ethnic and economic backgrounds. The Center has also reached into the community to extend services by collaborating with Milagro House. This collaboration has resulted in a United Way pilot program for providing child care.

Stephen L. Powell is the 2007 recipient in the Individual Business Person category. Mr. Powell is President and owner of Powell Steel Corporation which he started 15 years ago. He attributes his success to the philosophy of doing each job right the first time and following through on the promises that are made to customers. He credits his family roots with instilling in him the difference between right and wrong and an understanding of humility. Powell has established a strong performance management system and a competitive benefits package for employees that includes a company profit sharing component. He considers his employees as the company’s greatest resource. Powell also takes his belief in helping people to succeed into the community by devoting his time to issues of fairness and justice especially as it affects urban youth. He works to foster programs designed to improve the community’s quality of life.
