After experiencing or being exposed to trauma, individuals often require supportive interventions in order to avoid developing chronic trauma-related psychiatric conditions. If the violence is committed by someone we know and trust, or in a place where we expect to be safe, our feelings of betrayal are enormous and our sense of secure boundaries is shaken. If the offender is a pastor or religious leader, our faith itself may be challenged. Congregations, like individuals, require supportive intervention after trauma. Examples of trauma that can impact congregations include – pastoral sexual abuse of an adult member or of a child; the murder or rape of a congregant; commission of a violent crime by a member; or a violent incident in the community resulting in multiple casualties. Education about the psychological, physical and social impact of trauma; a safe place to talk with others about what happened, and reassurance that trauma-related symptoms are normal in the aftermath of exposure can greatly aid healing.
